The Design & Material

The handle is made of Zytel (a glass-reinforced nylon) or a similar high-strength polymer. Gerber introduced these synthetic versions in the late 1970s and early 1980s as a lighter, more durable alternative to the heavy brass frames.

• Handle Texture: The “checkering” or stippled texture on the sides was designed for a secure grip in wet conditions—something the polished wood and brass versions struggled with.

• The Blade: You can see the 315 stamp near the tang. This usually indicates the specific model or production batch within the Folding Sportsman series. The blade is likely 440C stainless steel, which was Gerber’s standard for this era, known for holding a decent edge and being highly corrosion-resistant.

Historical Significance

This knife is a “missing link” in cutlery evolution. It was designed during the period when Pete Gerber was collaborating with legendary designers like Blackie Collins.

The FS1 frame was the direct mechanical inspiration for the Gerber LST (Lightweight Soft Touch), which debuted in 1981. The LST became one of the most successful pocketknives in history because it was the first to prove that a completely synthetic-handled knife could be “serious” enough for outdoor use.
