The company now known as Benchmade began its journey in the late 1970s as Balisong USA, focusing on manufacturing butterfly knives. In the early 1980s, it transitioned to the name Pacific Cutlery, a step that preceded its final evolution into Benchmade. The knives produced during these initial phases were notable for their wide array of custom blade designs. Many of these were expertly hand-ground by master knifemaker Jody Samson, renowned for his work on the swords for the film Conan the Barbarian. Adding to their distinctiveness, the handles frequently incorporated exotic inlay materials like ivory, prehistoric ivory, scrimshawed ivory, mother-of-pearl, ebony, and tropical woods.
