Pacific Cutlery & Benchmade
Pacific Cutlery has a rich history in the world of butterfly knives (balisongs). The company began manufacturing these knives in the late 1970s under the name Balisong USA. In the early 1980s, they rebranded as Pacific Cutlery, and later evolved into the well-known knife manufacturer, Benchmade.
Early knives from Pacific Cutlery were notable for their diverse and often custom blade designs. Many of these blades were hand-ground by master knifemaker Jody Samson. The handles frequently featured exotic inlays such as ivory (including prehistoric and scrimshawed varieties), mother-of-pearl, ebony, and various tropical woods.
Jody Samson: Master Knifemaker
Jody Samson was a highly respected knifemaker and bladesmith from Burbank, California. He began crafting knives full-time in 1974 and is particularly recognized for his contributions to Benchmade’s butterfly knife designs.
