Victor Anselmo (1945-2016) was a highly regarded American bladesmith celebrated for his exceptional custom knives and swords. He began his career in 1957, becoming a full-time maker by 1966. Anselmo crafted a diverse range of edged tools, including hunting knives, bowies, and daggers.
Beyond these traditional pieces, Anselmo also revolutionized the balisong, or butterfly knife. He introduced innovative designs and refined existing mechanisms, significantly improving the balisong’s fluidity, durability, and overall performance.
Victor is credited with originating the solid handle channel-style balisong design. This design features handles with grooves or channels that fully enclose the blade when the knife is closed, making it safer and more compact.
His contribution to Bali-Song U.S.A.’s designs led to them winning Blade Magazine’s Award of the Year for best American-made new design in 1979.
While his work was widely admired across all his creations, Anselmo achieved lasting fame for forging the iconic Beastmaster sword in 1981 for the film of the same name. This distinctive sword solidified his reputation and continues to inspire bladesmiths and collectors.
