Harvey Draper Custom Fighting Dagger & Leather Sheath – Ephraim, Utah, Circa late 1960s/Early 1970s

$1,250.00

This is a rare, pristine example of a custom combat/fighting dagger crafted by the legendary late master knifemaker, Harvey Draper, out of his Ephraim, Utah shop. Boasting an impressive overall length of 14 inches with an 8-inch double-edged dagger blade, this piece perfectly exhibits the impeccable mirror polish and flawless symmetrical grind lines that defined the “Utah School” of custom knifemaking.

The knife features a deeply hollow-ground, double-edged blade forged from thick high-grade steel stock (typically 440C), transitioning into an ornate, hand-engraved brass double guard detailing a classic oak leaf and acorn motif. The meticulously stacked leather handle offers a secure, traditional grip, beautifully offset by polished aluminum and brass spacers. It is anchored by a matching, heavily engraved brass pommel cap featuring a lanyard hole and an included cord. The blade is cleanly stamped on the ricasso: DRAPER / Ephraim, Utah. Accompanied by its original, high-quality hand-stitched dark leather sheath.

Harvey Draper (1924–1982)

Born in 1924, Harvey Edgel Draper was one of the founding fathers of the celebrated “Utah School” of custom knifemaking—a movement that fundamentally shaped the golden era of modern custom blades. In 1965, Draper was hired by legendary maker Gil Hibben at his Manti, Utah shop. By 1966, alongside his son Bart and relative Bruce, Harvey founded the Draper Knife Shop in nearby Ephraim, Utah.

Draper’s shop became a legendary hub for elite craftsmanship, fostering and collaborating with iconic mastersmiths like Steve Johnson, Buster Warenski, and Rod Chappel. Renowned for their uncompromising fit, finish, and highly functional mirror-polished hunting and fighting knives, vintage Draper blades remain highly coveted milestones in American bladesmithing history. Harvey Draper’s prolific career tragically came to an end in October 1982 due to a mid-air structural failure during a recreational flight. Today, his knives are centerpiece additions to high-end custom knife collections.
