In 1958, the Rolls Razor company was failing because electric razors were taking over. It was bought by a flamboyant entrepreneur named John Bloom. He used the “Rolls Razor” name (which people associated with high-end luxury) to pivot the company into selling washing machines.
Bloom became a millionaire and a major socialite in the 1960s London scene. At one of his legendary parties in his Park Lane flat, a young, unknown singer named David Jones was invited to perform. At this party, Bloom introduced the young singer to a high-profile agent. That introduction directly led to the singer’s first record deal—and shortly after, he changed his name to David Bowie.
